The Wine Loft
I attended the opening of the Wine Loft roughly one year ago and found myself amazed at the concept. However, I never review a place at the opening. It simply is not fair to the venue. Recently, I stopped by for an honest to goodness review:
The Wine Loft is a truly innovative concept for the Azalea City. The menu is sparse and dotted with small plates. This is not a place to pig out, it is a place to enjoy wine. There are hundreds of bottles to chose from from all over the world. They also offer beer and mixed drinks.
The atmosphere is beautiful with a 30 foot ceiling and a huge modern painting that nearly cover one entire wall. Like so many coffee houses these days the Loft features couches for lounging. The difference being that these are not from a thrift store but rather covered in leather so smooth you will think you are sitting on a cloud. There is an upstairs balcony, ample outdoor seating, and a semi-secluded room with a sheer drapery the servers have nicknamed the make-out room.
After debating the menu for a few minutes I chose a glass Vinos Sin Ley Zestos Especial a medium red that is a blend of Tempranillo and Syrah from Spain. I figured a Spanish wine would go well with the Bruschetta with Wild Mushroom and Manchego (the famous Spanish cheese). I chose well, the Syrah grapes added a bright fruity element to the dark brooding berry flavors of the Tempranillo. The finish was clean and crisp which accented the woody mushrooms atop the perfectly prepared bruschetta and the tangy Manchego was the perfect salt substitute.
I was lucky enough to arrive during what the Wine Loft calls its Debriefing Hours, a sophisticated twist on the more pedestrian “Happy Hour.” Since their clientèle is made up primarily of doctors, lawyers, and country clubbers the Metropolitan slant offers $2 off of everything, food or drink. The Wine Loft remains a treasure for the Mobile area.
